Chapter eleven

Astra

Black shadows wind around my arms and legs, wrapping around my body like a comforting caress. The last time the magic wrapped around me like this was when Maven saved me in the cave.

One moment I’m in the ballroom with Royle painfully gripping my arm. The next moment, I’m wrapped in my demon’s arms with his soothing black shadows. I always knew I was different, but I shouldn’t feel comforted by a demon’s magic. Right?

Cold air hits my face and I take in my surroundings. We are outside on a rooftop. The whole area is decorated with Christmas lights and all kinds of decor, but I can’t appreciate it at the moment. Right now, I just want to be somewhere warm where I can cuddle with my alpha.

“Astra I–”

I slash a hand through the air and interrupt him. He still looks human, and I want to see what he really looks like. Somehow I know, deep down, this is my Maven.

“I want to see what you really look like. Show me.” I demand. To emphasize my point, I stomp my foot. Damn, I probably look like a spoiled child throwing a tantrum to try to get their way, but I want to see him. I need to see him.

Like magic melting off of his body, his true form stands before me. His light blue skin is just as pretty as I remember, his iridescent white hair glimmers under the twinkling lights where I see his pretty horns. His tail whips nervously behind him. The only thing that didn’t change are his pretty, ice-blue eyes. That’s why they looked so familiar.

My lips part on a gasp. “I knew it. It's you!” I throw my arms around him and he pulls me into a hug. I climb him like a tree and wrap my legs around his waist.

“Why didn’t you tell me, Maven?” I whisper.

He shudders when I say his name. “I didn’t want to scare you. You were just a kid, and you’d been kidnapped. What if my demon appearance brought back those fears?”

“But we were friends once, weren't we?” I can’t keep the hurt out of my voice. I think about that day Maven saved me. For some reason, I instantly trusted him, and only him. We spent days together. Hours and hours of chatting. Of getting to know each other. It was all innocent, but it was genuine.

“Of course we were. I’m a Prince of the Fourth Kingdom of the Demon Realm. Do you think just anyone would know I have an obsession with human Christmas romance books?”

I burst into laughter and hug him tighter, shivering. “Will you take me somewhere warm, pretty demon?”

“Sure. Where to, little human?”

“I’ll go anywhere with you,” I answer sleepily. What the hell is wrong with me? Why am I so tired?

“How do you feel about Winter’s Edge? It’s only a few towns over. I have a cabin there”

Giddiness fills me. Did my demon still want to experience the wonders of Christmas? Because Winter’s Edge is not only the friendliest town in Arkadia, it’s also the most festive.
